2,000 sesame farmers benefit from Olam’s outgrow initiative in Jigawa

Olam Nigeria Limited has empowered 2,000 Sesame farmers in Jigawa State, to increase the country’s share of agricultural commodities for export market.The programme, anchored under its Sustainable Village Program (SVP) was designed to improve the livelihoods of Sesame farmers through distribution of farm inputs, training on crop management practices and international market accessibility.

Inaugurating the Outgrow programme, in Gumel and Garki local government areas of the state, Olam Branch Manager, Roshan Tated told the farming communities that the distribution of high-yielding seeds and training materials to the farmers was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility to build food production.

Beyond skill acquisition, Roshan stressed that the agro alien facility also extend its interest-free credit facility on fertilizers and pesticides to strengthen economic viability of farmers.

According to Mr. Roshan “Olam has been providing global market access to Sesame farmers in Nigeria in the last 20 years, the programme will go a long way in increasing yield per hectare. Sesame yield Nigeria currently stands at 350-500 kg per hectare, whereas the global average is 800-1000 kg per hectare.
